"As the 60th anniversary of "Song of the South" rolled around, there was a lot of speculation in the entertainment press as to whether Disney was going to finally release it on DVD. Every reference was followed by some statement of its overt racism, as if its effects were a great concern for Disney and anyone who might view the film. This critical climate, hopelessly poisoned by nearly two decades of identity politics and cultural warfare, made any serious discussion of the film impossible. After getting my hands on a VHS bootleg, I was determined to see the supposedly notorious 40s family movie and analyze it objectively in all its aspects and implications."
